Last week on the network talk show The View guest Bill O`Reilly was .Fashion Shoes
subjected to a walkout by two of the program`s interviewers, Joy Behar and Whoopi Goldberg.
Was the walkout justified? By examining O`Reilly`s comment that triggered the exit the logical conclusion to be drawn by examining the facts is that not only were the walkouts justified; Behar and Goldberg should be heartily commended.
The walkout was triggered by a comment that O`Reilly made that was consistent with NFL Jerseys
anti-Islamic bigots who have spoken out on the topic. O`Reilly ladies handbags
opposed the building of an Islamic center near ground zero.
This opposition exists despite the fact that the imam supporting the measure has been the quintessence of inclusive thought in the religious sphere. The FBI has used him to brief agents as part of their sensitivity training. He has interacted regularly with figures from the Christian and Jewish communities.
There is another compelling reason why the proposed Islamic ed hardy caps
center should be built without incident. The group seeking to build the center owns the property in question. Without so much as a minimal legal or moral case to prohibit its construction, why should the imam and the group he represents be denied the opportunity to develop the group`s property?
When asked why he opposed the building of the center, O`Reilly struck familiar ground. He stated that because it was Muslims who had bombed the Twin Towers on 9/11 that the center should not be built.
Goldberg quickly replied that extremists had bombed the Twin Towers. Behar concurred and they walked off the set to applause.
Let us use O`Reilly`s own twisted reasoning to show the fallacy in his warped thinking. Abraham Lincoln was assassinated by John Wilkes Booth. His assassin had grown up in a white Protestant home.
At a subsequent point if someone wishes to build a center for the ed hardy
Young Men`s Christian Association what should be the response if O`Reilly`s contorted reasoning is followed? Clearly, given its roots in American Christian Protestantism, the YMCA should be denied that opportunity even if the organization owns the property.
The reason is that Christian Protestantism was responsible for the assassination of Lincoln. Remember that Booth was part of a Christian conspiracy and had been chosen as the group`s assassin
Let us carry this process one step further. With O`Reilly and other media demagogues such as Rush Limbaugh and Glenn Beck carrying the anti-Islamic center torch, why is it that they do designer shoes
not want an independent investigation of 9/11 to determine through a full inquiry what happened that tragic day in New York City? It is so much easier to point fingers of blame at an entire religion in an Archie Bunker style manifestation of prejudice.
So what did O`Reilly say after Goldberg and Behar exited? He looked into the camera and, without so much as a blush, calmly said that if he offended anyone from the Islamic community that he was sorry.
O`Reilly had just said that a community center should not brand bags
be constructed because Islam was responsible for the 9/11 killings. So moments later, after the women walked out on him, his response is in the form of "Well gee, I didn`t mean to offend anybody!"
More media figures should follow the examples of Goldberg and Behar and call out those like O`Reilly who make comments laced with bigotry to appeal to their narrow-minded, twisted bases and fatten their wallets in the process.

WASHINGTON ¡ª It was the end of a long and testy gripe session with tiffany jewellery
House Democrats on Wednesday, and Vice President Joseph R. Biden Jr. had had enough.
For two hours, Mr. Biden had been going back and forth with furious members of his own party over President Obama¡¯s deal with Republicans on tax cuts. In a basement room at the Capitol, Mr. Biden was trying to convince Democrats tiffany jewelry
that the deal was the best one they were going to get.
Then Representative Anthony Weiner of New York got up and asserted that Mr. Obama was acting like a ¡°negotiator in chief¡± instead of a ¡°leader¡± who gets things done.
Mr. Biden erupted. ¡°There¡¯s no goddamned way I¡¯m going to stand here and talk about the president tiffany
like that,¡± the vice president said, according to two people in the room.
In the annals of bickering among Democrats, the exchange between Mr. Biden and Mr. Weiner was mild. But it highlights the distance that Mr. Biden and Mr. Obama have traveled since they ran against each other in the 2008 Democratic primaries, a campaign season that Mr. Biden kicked off by saying Mr. Obama was ¡°the first mainstream African-American who is articulate and bright and clean and a nice-looking guy.¡±
Now, at the halfway point of a first term in which Mr. Obama has mostly relied on the counsel of a tightly closed inner circle, Mr. Biden is taking a more prominent and influential role. With the departure of Rahm Emanuel as chief of staff and Mr. Obama¡¯s need to negotiate with Congressional Republicans if he is to advance his agenda, the president is silver jewelry
increasingly using Mr. Biden as a multipurpose emissary while continuing to seek his counsel behind the scenes.
Mr. Biden not only played an important role in negotiating the tax deal with Republicans and trying to sell it to Democrats, but also was one of the people in the West Wing who urged Mr. Obama to try to find a compromise on the issue in the first place, aides said.
The president is at a crucial point, with a restive party that is trying to figure out what its role and relationship with the White House will be leading up to the 2012 elections.
Among Democrats on Capitol Hill, Mr. Biden¡¯s role in the back-channel compromise with Republicans on tax cuts has engendered some resentment, along with questions about whether he will encourage further accommodation with Republicans or serve as a liberal counterweight to those in the White House who are advocating a move to the center.
Republicans are still assessing how powerful a player he will be as the White House adapts to a divided government. But in both parties, he is seen if nothing else as someone well positioned to shuttle between Congress and the West Wing.
¡°I guarantee you, Joe¡¯s walking back to the White House with a head full of information,¡± said Senator Christopher J. Dodd, a Connecticut Democrat and close friend of Mr. Biden. The president, Mr. Dodd said, needs cheap tiffany jewellery
Mr. Biden¡¯s wide network because he ¡°just doesn¡¯t have the personal relationships that Joe has.¡±
Or, as Mr. Weiner put it in an interview, ¡°Biden brings everything that Rahm Emanuel brings, but the major difference is everyone likes Joe Biden.¡±
While Mr. Biden has credibility with the Democratic left, his long record in the Senate has enough moments in which he proved willing to work with or give ground to Republicans that they view him as less dogmatic than many other administration officials.
Mr. Biden alienated some of the left when he led the Senate Judiciary Committee¡¯s hearings for Clarence Thomas¡¯s nomination to the Supreme Court in 1991. While he voted against confirmation, Mr. Biden made decisions during the hearings, including not allowing testimony about pornography rentals, that many critics believed helped Justice Thomas weather the confirmation process.
Beyond his behind-the-scenes role in negotiating the tax deal with Republicans ¡ª a path that Mr. Biden and Mr. Obama decided on in a recent conversation at the White House, aides say ¡ª the vice president has also been trying to win Republican votes in the Senate for ratification of the so-called New Start nuclear arms treaty with Russia.
That background for compromise is now being put to use at the White House, from Mr. Biden¡¯s diplomatic mission to try to soothe the angry House Democrats to tiffany and co
his secret shuttling between his boss and the Republican Senate leader, Mitch McConnell, to iron out the tax deal.
Mr. Biden took the lead in nudging Iraq¡¯s leaders into forming a new coalition government. He has been given the task of navigating growing tensions in Lebanon. And while Mr. Obama rejected Mr. Biden¡¯s recommendation of a narrowly focused counterterrorism strategy for Afghanistan in favor of a more expansive counterinsurgency approach, the halting pace of progress in Afghanistan has left some administration officials wondering if the president might not eventually come around to Mr. Biden¡¯s way of thinking. |

she was a fierce lover of her family

RALEIGH, N.C. — In the moments before the funeral for Elizabeth Edwards began here Saturday afternoon, women from the Edenton Street United Methodist Church removed a spray of white lilies and yellow roses from her coffin. Men wiped the rain from the lid, preparing it to be wheeled into the sanctuary, where 1,100 Red Laser people waited.

The former United States Senator John Edwards, a failed Democratic presidential candidate and her estranged husband, stood a few feet behind and held hands with their youngest Laser Pointer two children. He leaned down and whispered to their 12-year-old daughter, Emma Claire.
“You O.K.?” he asked. Emma Claire nodded, and the family filed inside.
For the next 75 minutes, Mrs. Edwards, who died Tuesday at age 61, was eulogized as a smart, funny, authentic, outspoken and always optimistic woman who was as intense playing a game of Boggle Tablet PC as she was in politics and life.
And above all, speakers said, she was a fierce lover of her family.
“She would do anything in the world to protect all of us, no matter what the personal cost was to her,” said her daughter Catharine Edwards, 28, who, along with two longtime family friends, offered eulogies for Mrs. Edwards.
Then she read a letter that her mother had been writing for many years to help prepare her children for life after her death.
“You are complete joy to me,” Mrs. Edwards wrote. “I hope you will always know that. Wherever I am, wherever you are, I have my arms wrapped around you.”
The church held hundreds of friends, former campaign staff members and politicians who arrived to pay respects to a certain breed of political spouse whose high-profile life became an inspiration for people who, like she, had faced the death of a child, cancer and marital infidelity.
Sitting in the second row was Senator John Kerry, who picked Mr. Edwards as his running mate in the 2004 presidential campaign. Gov. Bev Perdue of North Carolina attended, as did Victoria Flip Laser Pointer Reggie Kennedy, the widow of Senator Edward M. Kennedy, and several members of Congress.
Mrs. Edwards was buried Saturday in a cemetery plot next to the couple’s son Wade, who was killed in a car accident in 1996 when he was 16. His funeral was at the same church. Tyler Highsmith, who was in the car when Wade died, was a pallbearer for both Wade and, now, his mother.
From the day Wade was buried until Emma Claire was born, Mrs. Edwards visited his grave daily and kept it and others around it well tended. Friends went to the gravesite on Friday to make sure it looked as good as Mrs. Edwards would have wanted.
The funeral attracted five people from the Westboro Baptist Church, an anti-gay religious group from Topeka, Kan., who waved signs with disparaging messages. The protesters, whose fight for the right to picket at soldiers’ funerals was argued before the United States Supreme Court this month, were kept two blocks from the entrance to the church.
Their plans to protest at the funeral prompted an estimated 300 people to show up for a counterprotest. Their signs read “Love” and “Hero.”
One was Rosie Bolin, 43, a lifelong Raleigh resident who did not know Mrs. Edwards but watched a series of interviews with her in the days after her death and was inspired. “She was such an example of grace laser pointers pens under adversity,” Ms. Bolin said.
Mrs. Edwards learned she had cancer in 2004, the day after her husband lost his bid for the vice presidency. In 2007, the family announced that her cancer had returned but that Mr. Edwards’s quest for the presidency in 2008 would continue. During that time, she battled privately with revelations that Mr. Edwards had an affair with a campaign staff member, Rielle Hunter, and later that the two conceived a child.
Although Mr. and Mrs. Edwards were in the final stages of a divorce when she died, family friends said Mr. Edwards, crushed and grieving, rarely left her room in the time leading up to her death.
Glenn Bergenfield, a New Jersey lawyer who met Mrs. Edwards in law school and gave one of the eulogies, said in an interview Friday that Mr. Edwards “has loved her for decades and that’s the long and the Blue Laser short of it. You can have complicated feelings about people who you love.”
In his eulogy, Mr. Bergenfield said he had spent the last few days looking around the Edwards house for some notes or direction on how to conduct the funeral. Mrs. Edwards was a relentless and energetic planner. Surely she would have left detailed notes.
But she had not.
“As the week has worn on I have begun to think she saw the sad and beautiful metaphor: We must go on ourselves,” he said.
But she did make some plans, he said. She made sure that Christmas — her favorite time of year — was well in hand.
From the lectern, he addressed Emma Claire and Jack, the Edwardses’ green laser 10-year-old son.
“Your mom has Christmas covered this year,” he told them. “Probably a few years beyond, too. No worries there.” |
